Another amazing day at Playa Lagarto with the awes Another amazing day at Playa Lagarto with the awesome team at Tortugas Pedasi! 🐢🌴 It's bittersweet leaving Panama, not just because of the amazing people and friendships made, but also because of my passion for conservation work. 😢 As I embark on my 'final act' on this planet, I'm determined to make a difference and spend more time helping to protect our beautiful environment. 💚🌍 It's time to get serious about conservation, and I'm not afraid to be annoying and encourage my friends to join me in this mission! Hoo boy!! What a day! It started with a 4:30 am w Hoo boy!! What a day! It started with a 4:30 am wake-up call to patrol the beach to check for new nests. After 3.5 miles and no new nests, we returned to our rooms. We had a little breakfast, then, at 8:00 am, returned to do a beach clean-up. In about 2 hours, we had two full recycle bags of plastic and other types of waste that washed ashore. Bottles, toothbrushes, cans, and parts of shoes, so much plastic trash ends up in the ocean, on the beach, in the wildlife, and our food. While it's great to leave the beach in better condition than we found it, we need more people to be mindful of their waste and its environmental impact. Let's take action to reduce our plastic consumption and dispose of waste properly. Together, we can make a difference! #ProtectOurBeaches #ReducePlasticWaste #TakeActionNow

They are currently working on geo-tagging nesting turtles and recording the information. They have discovered some behaviors that will enable them to improve conservation efforts. We got his photo of a female turtle, looking tired We got his photo of a female turtle, looking tired, on her way back home to the ocean after the grueling task of digging a nest, laying her eggs, and covering and disguising the nest as best she can. One of the Organizations we support estimated that last year they collected eggs from around 240 nests. An average of 100 eggs in each nest would make 24,000 eggs. Considering that only one in 1,000 hatchlings survive, at best, only 24 will make it to maturity. Added to the natural dangers they encounter with climate change and ocean pollution, their chances of survival are even less than that. Conservation efforts are essential to help keep the populations of sea turtles in balance. Our GofFundMe is still up. Please consider donating to help these organizations continue their work. More on our Sea Turtle Conservation efforts: In t More on our Sea Turtle Conservation efforts: In this photo, the eggs have already been gathered and are now placed in an enclosed protected nest area, keeping them safe from predators. All of this is performed by a small community volunteer group. Two groups collect the eggs and move them to a safe area; one goes out at 9 pm and the second at 4 am during the turtles' high nesting season. These folks have been doing this for nearly 20 years; they do it with dedication, and it's all voluntary. And a reminder that our GoFundMe is still going, and you can still contribute to our cause. Funds are needed for upkeeping & replacing part of the protected areas and for equipment for beach cleanup. In this video, the female turtle is covering up he In this video, the female turtle is covering up her nest. The turtles go into a trance-like state while laying the eggs. So along with using only red light, the turtles are relatively unaware that we are there. The eggs have already been collected here, and the turtle is covering up her nest. She will use all four flippers and then use her body to tamp down the sand, making the nest less apparent to any predators lurking on the beach. This process has been going on for millions of years; now, these animals are endangered by human activity.
