Reflections on a Building, NYC, 5.31.15
The Freedom Tower, reflecting on a nearby building. Originally called the Freedom Tower, the owners changed the name back to One World Trade Center. The entire World Trade Center was rebuilt after the 9/11 attacks that brought down the Twin Towers. There were many proposals and designs for this site, bit NYC and it’s people were committed to rebuilding the area. the Financial Crisis of 2008 forced the Port Authority, which manages the site, to once again redesign the area with the new financial reality in mind.
When I was a kid, I remember an old photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, probably on the Staten Island Ferry with the Twin Towers, still under construction in the background. Then Breakfast in America came out and had one of my favorite album covers of all time. In the cover illustration, the Twin Towers were two cartons standing up to mimic the buildings.
I had dinner and photographed many event at Windows on the World, in the North Tower, floors 106-107. On 9/11, people working to open the restaurant died in the attacks on those floors.
In all the death toll, 2,996, of the attacks was I always thought these attacks were senseless. And, indeed a lot of the events afterwards were just as senseless. The Iraq war, and all the fallout from that, in all who knows how many people died.
Hopefully we will remember all the death and destruction of violence and these types of attacks and retaliation, and maybe grow to be better people, a better inhabitant of this planet.
